Announcing :: Art Walk Studio!

I'm super excited to announce a brand new program titled Art Walk Studio!

It's an opportunity that leverages the robust foot traffic that occurs every first Saturday night of the month in downtown Santa Ana, where art enthusiasts come out in droves, to dine, mingle, and celebrate art.

If you are an artist who would like to show/sell/market your art, Studio CRESCENDOh's Art Walk Studio program offers you the unique opportunity to reserve table or wall space to do just that for a modest $28.

The first month that you can reserve your spot is for this coming December, and the months thereafter. Spots are limited and reservations will be on a first come, first serve basis. NOTE: The December art walk will piggy back on the Book Launch celebration with Belinda Fireman. It's gonna be a doosey.

Journal It! Book Signing + Painting Demo with Belinda Fireman!

There's really not a spread in my new book, Journal It! that I don't adore. But one of my favorites is this one, by Belinda Fireman, who takes the mystery out of exactly how she creates one of her signature journaling methods. Each of the 19 artist shares in this manner, which makes Journal It! so special.

As soon as I saw Belinda's work more than a year ago, I knew I loved it. So colorful and multi-layered but interestingly, so uncomplicated and honest. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Belinda by meeting up with her once in California and another time in Colorado and I'm really excited that she will be our special guest at this FREE event that you are all invited to:

Belinda is not only a journal artist, she is also a wonderful painter. At our party, she'll be signing copies of Journal It! with me, while she also does a live painting demo and also having a few pieces available for purchase.

This event takes place on the first Saturday of December, which is the monthly Art Walk in downtown Santa Ana. If you've been to one of our events of this nature before, you know that it gets very crowded. But once you make it inside, you'll be glad you did because it's where the most interesting,  art-focused people gather to appreciate and celebrate art. This is a FREE event but it is recommended that you give yourself ample time to park, as traffic can get quite heavy.

Books. Painitng. Live music. Wine. Cheese. Interesting conversations with interesting people (and a few more surprises up our sleeves). What's not to love? The Agreement to be Mindful of Ourselves

This is the new sign that I have hung in Studio CRESCENDOh. And it's the singular most important message that I conveyed yesterday morning, before handing the floor over to artist Stephanie Jones Rubiano, who taught her wonderful class, Enviable Encaustics. A gentle reminder to be mindful of ourselves in the company of others.

As Stephanie took the wheel, the encaustic medium (beeswax + lamar resin) started to melt and fill the studio with such a lovely aroma.

And lots of fun art materials came out to be shared, including Stephanie's incredible stash of vintage tintypes.


Under her guidance, students made gorgeous art, like this piece by Christy Nimeh.


Everyone did a magnificent job. And Stephanie commented how she learned so much from what the students were making.

We even had a major snaffoo where the multiple power heat guns caused the circuit to break. But wouldn't you know, we all remained, calm, cool, collected, and postitive. Mindful of ourselves. Thankfully, it happened right when it was time to break for lunch. And by the time everyone came back from lunch, the problem was solved.


It was a beautiful day.

PS: Stephanie will be back again to teach in 2013. There are lots of exciting classes that are lining up, actually. Not all class pages are live yet but they will be soon. But you can take a look at some of what's starting to cook on our master calendar here. Hope you'll check back often.

Collected Intuitions :: The Day After

We did it.
We, the artists of The Painting Studio had our first show last night.

We worked all year long to find our voices through paint.
We worked all week long to hang our art on the walls, stand tall, and open the doors to the public.

We invited the amazing Louise Bearzi to sing.
And sing she did as she took our breaths away with her artistry, her passion.

And the people came.


And truly packed the studio to make it a full house.

Art was admired and many pieces sold. And fun had by all.

So mark your calendars. The first Saturday of every month. We will aim to open Studio CRESCENDOh every first Saturday night to welcome everyone who comes out to enjoy the Artist Village open house. We'll fill it with fun and surprises. See you November 3rd from 7-10PM. Everyone welcome.

Artist's Statement :: Who We Are Together

To prepare for the upcoming art show in Studio Crescendoh, this Saturday night, I prepared my very first Artist's Statement.

I've hung it with my 6 pieces that I'm showing and as reflected in my statement, my hope is that these works are authentic to who and where I am. I love these works.


I didn't intend for all six to have a unifying thread but it ended up that they did. These works, which were all started and completed in 2012, were made with a muse named Jeung. And to explain the muse, I made a collection statement as follows:

I'm proud to be joining the other talented artists who have worked hard all year long with me to experiment with methods while unearthing our authentic voices. Each artist will have their works hung for public viewing this Saturday night.

Artist's Statement

That I have dipped a paintbrush into paint and then swiped it onto canvas, that I have crocheted yarn and stitched it onto the same canvas, that I have pierced through it with a sharp needle, that I have written on it with pen, pencil, and ink, that I have hated it, loved it, almost thrown it away, but instead saved it and nurtured it and reinvented it …

Means ultimately that I have worked really hard to create original art and in the process, express what I hope is an authentic representation of who I am and where I am.

That you are looking at these works, that you might like it, that you may even love it, that you might see something interesting or important through it …

Means that through art, we are intersecting and interacting with one another in one of the most creative ways possible as we journey on this earth to explore not only “who I am,” but the fascinating possibilities of “who we are together.”

In Korean culture, the one that I was raised in, the term “I love you” is hardly ever expressed in everyday life. When it is expressed, it is rare and almost seen as being melodramatic … a phrase that belongs more in a movie scene rather than real life.

Jeung is a concept within Korean culture that is very close to love … but not quite. It is about the deep fondness between two people that develops through time, familiarity, esteem, and regard. If it were to be love, it would likely be philos—the strand of love based on the Greek term that is rooted in friendship. But I would argue that jeung also has the ability to become eros-like and agape-like.

I view jeung to be more powerful than love, because it is something that develops not at first sight, but through time, which is the requisite to truly getting to know someone. However, just because you spend time getting to know someone does not mean that you develop jeung. You can know a person for a lifetime and have nothing but disdain for him or her.

For this collection, my muse was jeung. A concept that is kind of like love, but much more than love.

Book Signing to Celebrate Vignette's 17th Anniversary

Per the invitation of owner Lori Chandler, I had the pleasure of being a guest of Vignettes Antique Store, located in the Ocean Beach Antique District in San Diego.

To celebrate the store's 17th anniversary, I was happy to sign my books, meet new friends, visit with old friends, and enjoy the exquisite surroundings.

When I arrived, there was an amazing tent decorated to the nines by paper artist, Karen Lampard.

The fireplace mantle had books and flowers and words written on chalkboard paint. And a teaset all made of paper. There were mannequins with dresses made of fabric and paper ...

... and in every nook and corner, breathtaking assemblages made of paper ...

... and lots of beautiful flowers made of paper everywhere.

The bookshelf in the tent is where several of the books I've made were displayed ...
which made me smile.

And there was a wonderfully creative sign that was made within the store, right above a doorway leading to the tent. It also made me smile.

Right above the mantle was this hand lettered quote. What a great quote that summed up my experience at Vignettes.
Many thanks to Lori and Karen and the entire team at Vignettes for allowing me to be part of this special occasion. I look forward to future opportunities to collaborate with Lori and Karen and all the new friends I made at beautiful Vignettes. Announcing :: Belts, Bracelets, and Straps with Amy Hanna

I'm excited to announce a brand NEW workshop that will be taking place in Studio CRESCENDOh by the uber-talented Amy Hanna. It is called Belts, Bracelets and Straps and enrollment is open now, right here. Amy will show samples and provide instruction on how to juxtapose vintage elements with leather and some of ther other favorite materials.

She'll provide a basic buckle and leather pieces that can be used to create a belt, and another basic buckle that can be used to make a bracelet.




If there are treasured items in your collection ... like tin types, pennants, patches, and other special items, you are encouraged to bring them to class as Amy helps you design one-of-a-kind straps that can become belts, bracelets, or straps for bags.

I am honored to have Amy lead this fantastic class in Studio CRESCENOh. It's gonna be a good one.

Scenes From a Day of Art with Danita

Thought I'd share some fun shots that were captured during Danita's wonderful workshop in Studio CRESCENDOh this past Saturday. Everyone had such a agreat time learning from all that Danita taught.

It was wonderful to see Danita in action ... calm, cool, confident in sharing all of her knowledge, her tricks, tips, and methods for getting everyone to make fabulous collaged backgrounds and beautiful painted girls.

My admiration for Danita and her art goes back a long ways and so to be able to host her in the studio was really and truly a dream come true.

And guess what? She'll be back in 2013 to teach a 2-day class as she introduces additional methods like free motion stitching, and how that works together to push the awesomeness of mixed media to a whole new level. So stay tuned.

Renegade Craft Fair + Art Journaling in August with Pam Garrison

I'm super excited about attending this year's Renegade Craft Fair in Los Angeles this weekend. Have you been? It's the place to find the coolest art and hang with the hippest creatives ... listen to music, enjoy good food, take workshops, and on and on and on. And it's FREE for all! Yipee!

I am especially excited for this year's fair because Pam Garrison will be debuting some of her exciting new works in her totally awesome booth. My whole family and some of my other good friends will be there to support Pam and the other artists who I know have been working their tails off, getting ready to wow us.

Speaking of Pam ... you know she just taught her terrific 2-day art journaling workshop in Studio CRESCENDOh ... it was a completely sold out class with an epic waiting list. Due to the high demand and requests from folks to have her offer it again, we are proud to announce that this August 25th and 26th, she'll offer it again! Super fun.

It's no secret ... I love Danita.

Her art, her heart ... and her commitment to quality in every single thing that she does. I'm a fan.
How lucky am I to be able to host her this coming September in Studio CRESCENDOh, where she will teach a magnificent 1-day workshop ... all about her methods for creating her cool collaged backgrounds and painted girls ... yep. Lucky is the word.
