Announcing my UCIrvine Class :: Art & Activism

This spring quarter, I will be joining the lecturing faculty at @ucirvine 's School of Social Sciences to teach a brand new course I have developed titled Art&Activism. If you are a UCI student I hope you will consider enrolling as we dig deep creatively and intellectually. I feel it's gonna be a life-changing experience for all. Here's the course description:

Can art speak more or as effectively as conventional language? To what extent does an artist’s skill relate to the audibility and the reach of her art? Can art inspire contemplation? Can it affect/influence policy decisions? If art cannot affect social change, does its expression still have value?
This course examines these questions as we review examples of activist art in the 21st Century including how advances in technology affect the production, delivery, and consumption of art. The course also examines the evergreen activist nature of art within historical movements such as Baroque, Rococo, Renaissance, Impressionism, Expressionism, Fauvism, Surrealism, and Dadaism.
The course also examines what constitutes art, what makes art valuable, and the tensions that exist between individual versus collaborative expressions.

Ukulele Party :: November 5th

Have you wanted to learn the basics of how to play the ukulele? Well, I'm still a beginner myself but what I know I'm happy to teach. So grab your ukulele (smallest soprano size ... not the concert or tenor or baritone sizes) and join me on November 5th at 2PM. I'll show you how to tune the ukulele, how to play a handful of basic chords and with those basic chords, how to play and sing a song or two. I'll also show you how I painted my ukulele and provide paint and brushes and everything else for you to use to also paint your uke if you want to.

• Bring with you a screenshot receipt of a $50+ donation to a helping organization providing aid to victims of recent disasters
• Bring with you a canned food item (to be collected and donated to a local food bank)

My Art Retreat Weekend in Washington!

Fangs & Flaws, A Conversation With:

Dear friends:
I am honored and privileged and extremely thrilled to be leading a discussion with Redline Design on March 16, 2017, in Reno, Nevada. It'll be an intimate setting where we talk about the creative process, and the journey that I've been on, to pursue art with complete freedom, deep meaning, and uncensored expression. It's a never-ending journey, really.

If you are able, I hope you'll join me for this special experience where we will dive deep, raise a glass, nibble on treats, listen to each other, and leave with greater resolve to pursue lives where we the quality of light we shine onto our efforts is so lucid and bright that we can't help but find and express the truth of who we are.

Paint with Me in Washington!

I'm really excited to be teaching oil painting fundamentals this coming July 13-16, 2017 in a small farm community called Enumclaw, located outside of Seattle, Washington. It is part of the NW Country Art Retreats program run by Lisa Kumcur. It will be a retreat experience that includes ground transportation, lodging, reception, and just a whole lot of painting goodness. A perfect getaway for you to attend by yourself or with a friend in order to dig deep and unleash the wonders of oil painting in a safe, fun, beautiful environment.

Hello friends. What a year it's been. So many wonderful experiences teaching classes and teaching private painting sessions. Thank you. I wanted to let you know that: 

For all private sessions booked AFTER January 5, 2017, pricing and hours will be modified as follows:

ONE PERSON
Half day (9:30-12): $95
Full day (9:30-12 and then lunch from 12-1 and then paint 1-3:30 PM): $175

TWO or more PEOPLE
Half day: $80 per person
Full day: $160 per person

All private sessions booked BEFORE January 5, 2017, pricing and hours will remain as follows:

ONE PERSON
Half day (9-12): $85
Full day (9-12 and then lunch from 12-1 and then paint 1-4PM): $160

TWO or more PEOPLE
Half day: $70 per person
Full day: $150 per person

Payments via cash, check, paypal, or credit card will be accepted the day of the session. :-)
